Measuring Guides & Styles Explained

Our collars explained! Not everyone has heard of every type of collar and if the categories have left you a little confused, this page will help make things clearer! If you think your dog falls outside our standard sizes- please contact us as we are happy to make custom sizes for you.

HOUSE COLLARS

Available in 16mm, 20mm, 25mm or the 'sighthound' widths of 38mm and 50mm.

These collars are designed to be slipped over the head and adjusted to the neck size once on, so when choosing a size, please measure the largest part of your dogs head. These collars are lighter weight as they are primarily designed to hold the ID tag and have the least amount of bulk (commonly used for dogs that are walked on a harness), although the hardware we use is still strong!

STANDARD SIZES:

  • Small 8-13"
  • Medium 11-18.5"
  • Large 13-21"
  • X-Large 15-24"

MARTINGALE COLLARS

These collars were originally designed for sighthound breeds because their necks tend to be bigger than their heads, meaning they can slip out of a standard collar. The Martingale is made of two loops- when the dog pulls on a lead, the collar tightens and loosens gently without damaging the neck like a choke chain and will remain comfortably loose when the collar is not being pulled.

STANDARD SIZES:

  • X-Small 8-12"
  • Small 11-15"
  • Medium 13-18"
  • Large 14-22"
  • X-Large 17-26"

How to measure

Check 3 measurements as pictured:

A (largest point including ears)

B (smallest part of neck behind ears)

C (where the collar would naturally sit -around the middle of the neck).

Take measurements at A,B and C (A and B may be the same or very similar for sighthound breeds). The collar needs to be large enough to fit over the head at point A but not too large that it won't fit correctly at B. Point C is where the collar naturally sits when relaxed.

When in situ on your dog, when you pull on the D ring on the control loop, the two sides of the loop shouldn't touch (if they do, the collar is too loose and can be tightened with the triglide).

PIN/CAVESSON BUCKLE COLLARS

Traditional belt style metal pin buckle. Currently available in 20mm and 25mm webbing widths.

STANDARD SIZES:

  • Small 10-14"
  • Medium 12-16"
  • Large 15-19"
  • X-Large 17-22"

Use a measuring tape to measure the radius of your dog’s neck at it’s widest point (where the collar would usually sit).  When choosing your collar size, it should be 1 to 2″ bigger than your dog’s neck (the equivalent of being able to slide 2 fingers between the collar and the neck).

Our 20mm and 25mm wide quick release buckles can be swapped for a less bulky slip-through buckle. Easy to put on but completely secure once connected- here's how they work......

How to fit a slip-through buckle

Collars are worn at your own risk. We recommend that collars are not left on dogs unattended so there is no risk on collars becoming caught and causing strangulation.
