Building of a craft cabin! Commenced February 2024- ongoing...

Having moved to an old property with the first floor held up with old wooden beams, the structural engineer wasn't too happy with the idea of 20+ sewing machines (most being antique cast metal in body), being housed up there! Despite the fact we have started replacement of the floor joists in one part of the house, we have decided to create my own personal workspace in the form of a 3.5m x 7m fully insulated cabin/garden office.

First came a bit of tree surgery by my brother-in-law to remove an overhanging branch off a giant sycamore tree! Then measuring out and digging of the holes to house the concrete pad system for the base.

As with most things in this old property, nothing is straight forward so I also had days of digging out the excess soiling to make the area flat. No buried treasure sadly but a horse tooth (appropriate being part of the old coach house) and some broken antique clay pipe.

Next steps to build the wooden base and framework...

Teisha helpful as ever!

All the framework has been cleverly designed, measured, cut and erected by my talented husband.

Once the framework was up we had the challenging task of hauling a 60kg roll of rubber matting onto the roof! Well, we figured out a method and the end result created a lovely viewing area!

Now this is a proper job- all walls, floor and ceiling are fully insulated. Heavy duty floor base is down, OSB boards are up.

We reclaimed some beautiful, tall oak doors with double glazed glass panels to allow lots of light to enter. One door to be turned into a floor length window so I can sit at the sewing machine and look out into the field! Another challenge weighing about 50kg per panel! Our neighbour is luckily an electrian so very kindly took time to come and install the electrics for us.

Next, I enlisted the help of my Mum for a spot of painting 😄. Once that is done, we will begin with on the flooring.

Wow, what a difference a floor markes! The hubby and myself teamed up to lay some LVT flooring in 'store room' section of the cabin-  a first for us as normally we have engineered wood. Think it went well and not the racking is in.

Next, the flooring in the main section. The hubby got to work laying the laminate. The last small section will have some carpet underfloor for me to sew in absolute comfort 😄.
